Prophecy is telling the future before it happens.

The English word prophecy derives from prophéteia, which means “the gift of communicating and enforcing revealed truth.” A prophet is one who possesses that gift. He or she is responsible for faithfully declaring God’s Word. (Jeremiah 23:18-22)

The study of biblical prophecy brings with it two blessings to those who study it. First, it lets us know what’s going to happen ahead of time. Second, we can see prophecy made and then fulfilled throughout Scripture, giving us confidence for the events prophesied to come.

God’s Word differs significantly from modern psychic predictions. While psychic networks and fortune-tellers make vague or failed predictions, biblical prophecy is 100% accurate. The fulfillment of past prophecies, think of those concerning the coming of Christ as a good example, serve as evidence of the reliability of prophecies yet to be fulfilled.

Here are a few of the many fulfilled prophecies we find in Scripture:

The Virgin Birth Prophecy: “The Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold the virgin shall conceive, and she'll call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

The Bethlehem Prophecy: “ But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2)

The Suffering Servant Prophecy: Isaiah 52:13-53:12 provides an extensive description of Christ’s suffering. Of chapter 53’s twelve verses, all but one reappear in some form in the New Testament.

When we open our Bibles and see that God’s words spoken down through time came true EXACTLY as foretold, it builds confidence that the prophetic events foretold in Scripture will also be fulfilled. This consistency reminds us of the reliability of God and His Word.

Most importantly, prophecy always points back to God. Before its fulfillment, prophecy conveys an important message from God. After its fulfillment, prophecy produces praise to God.
