The Book of Revelation is intimidating because of its vivid imagery and complex visions. Here are some practical things you can do to better understand it.
Remember the Purpose of Revelation
The overarching theme of Revelation is Jesus Christ’s victorious return to defeat all evil and establish His reign. Revelation reminds us that in every trial and circumstance, God’s people are overcomers.
Consider the first verse in the first chapter of Revelation: it is the “Revelation of Jesus Christ…to show His servants.” (Revelation 1:1). So amidst all the warnings and visions and symbols, the ultimate purpose of the book is to unveil the glory, power, sovereignty, and victory of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Recognize the Pictures of Revelation
Revelation is a book of very important symbols that can be confusing, but don’t be discouraged. There are several reasons for using symbols throughout the book. Beyond that, remember that the book is the most self-interpreting book in the Bible. So if you read something you don’t understand, just patiently keep reading, and it will probably tell you in a few verses what it means.
